Last year my lovely grandad Tony was lucky enough to get a hospice space shortly before he passed away from a long battle with lung cancer. He was a very spirited person and the thought of dying alone was a significant worry, one which was greatly reduced with the hustle and bustle of the hospice. The level of care and attention he received whilst there was such a relief and they were so compassionate but honest- something that really put my grandad at ease. Alongside, the desire right till the end to push anyones buttons in the name of good fun. The work the tremendous staff, inordinate amount of ice cream provided and letting his retired guide dog Betty come to visit brought him no end of joy.
It is also really vital that specialist facilities like the one in Pontefract remain funded to keep providing such critical care for inpatients, outpatients and the support for all who go through the doors including families (where aftercare is provided such as grief counselling). The Prince of Wales Hospice, offers round the clock medical care, respite, physio sessions and is a vital hub in the 5 towns.
In keeping with his memory, I have decided to take on the Pontefract 10k! It was always super important to him that the impact you have is not just positive but benefits others who need it most. Although I can almost certainly guarantee running round Pontefract would have definitely made him laugh and ask ‘whatever would you want to do that for?’.
The Prince of Wales Hospice is really deserving of an hour or so of my time to complete this 10k on their behalf and raise valued donations x
