My name is Laith Flanagan, and I run with Ackworth Road Runners.
I first got into running during lockdown, and from the very beginning my grandad was my biggest supporter. He would tell me to “keep running” every chance he got, and those words have stayed with me ever since.
In April 2025, my grandad was diagnosed with terminal cancer. During his final months, he spent time in the trusted care of the Prince of Wales Hospice. Seeing the compassion, dignity, and kindness shown to him there made a lasting impact on me. It meant more than I can ever fully express.
Because of the incredible care he received, I’ve since started volunteering at the hospice myself. It feels like a way to honour him, to give something back, and to carry forward the encouragement he always gave me.
This year, I’ll be running the Dublin Marathon — the day after what would have been his 85th birthday. It feels like the perfect way to celebrate him, to carry his words with me, and to keep running just like he always told me to.
I’m taking on this challenge to raise money for the Prince of Wales Hospice, so they can continue offering the same comfort and support to other families when they need it most. Any donation, big or small, would mean the world
